About Brisbane Municipal Concert Band

For over a century the Brisbane  Municipal Concert Band has brought Brisbane residents together in an appreciation of music.  We connect with the community by providing everyday musicians the opportunity for lifelong musical enjoyment.

BMCB  is Brisbane’s most historically significant community band and has been entertaining the people of Brisbane for over 110 years.  It is one of the original member bands of the current Bands in Parks program.  Under the direction of David Jones, it has a strong, vibrant member base and has played at civic events, Anzac ceremonies, and gala concerts throughout the city.

Brisbane  Municipal Concert Band started in 1903, when a group of musicians founded and conducted by J. Hendry-Grice, met in a Fortitude Valley drapery store and formed the Valley Concert Band.  After a subsidy of 23 pounds from Council, the name was changed to Brisbane Municipal Concert  Band and played at the laying of the foundation stone of the current  City Hall where they rehearsed weekly for many years.

The band played for troops returning from the Boer War and subsequent world wars and has an unbroken record of Anzac ceremonies since the end of  WW1.  They also played for the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII)  when he visited the city in 1920 and welcomed home Sir Charles  Kingsford-Smith when he landed at Eagle Farm after crossing the Pacific.

By day, our members have regular jobs.  We’re doctors, accountants, teachers, nurses, parents, zoologists, retirees and students.  But after hours we come together to share a passion to make music.

If you would like to hire the band or any of its smaller ensembles for your next event, please contact us.
